Types:
– Single-Ply Membranes include Cured Elastomers (Thermosets), Uncured Elastomers, and Plastomers (Thermoplastics).
– Cured Elastomers like EPDM and Neoprene have a thickness of 30-120 mils and account for less than 10% of commercial roofing.
– Uncured Elastomers such as CSPE, CPE, PIB, and NBP have declined in use due to environmental concerns.
– Plastomers like PVC, KEE, and TPO make up over 55% of the commercial roofing market.
– Modified Bitumen Membranes were developed in Europe in the mid-1960s and commonly used in the US since 1975.

Advantages Over Asphalt Flat Roofing Systems:
– Membrane roofing provides seamless or strong-seamed connections, reducing leakage concerns.
– Repairs are easier due to the ability to locate breaks and leaks more accurately.
– Newer systems resist degradation from UV rays and expansion/contraction, eliminating the need for gravel.
– Membrane roofs are directly attached to buildings, eliminating the need for additional weight.
– Asphalt and gravel roofs often struggle to create proper seals at seams and connection points.
