**History and Leadership**:
– NIOSH was created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.
– NIOSH absorbed the Bureau of Mines research activities in 1996.
– Directors have included Marcus Key, John Finklea, Anthony Robbins, J. Donald Millar, Linda Rosenstock, and John Howard.
– NIOSH assisted in cleaning up Capitol Hill buildings after the anthrax attacks in 2001.
